Technology and the Home Based Business

No where has technology been more advantageous than in the home based business. The advent of the Internet has opened global doorways, allowing entrepreneurs access to the dream of owning their own business; a dream that was once unobtainable for most.

Personal computers, printers, and application programs are widely used and affordable to the average person of modest means. Websites are fast becoming easy and affordable to set up and maintain, allowing home entrepreneurs the opportunity to set up their own home based business endeavor with little or no starting capitol; their only expenditure being their own time and talents.

For those who are not technologically savvy, there are professional formats and designs available, complete with domain names to get the new business started in relatively short periods of time with little expense. In days gone by, freelance and self employed business people would need an office or in the least a mailing address, business phone, and contact information. Today, many lucrative and legitimate companies exist solely online, without any concrete address given or needed.

Email has quickly become the preferred method of communication for most businesses, allowing the freelance service provider to work solely from their computer terminal. Avenues of trade are easily accessible, from drop ship sites, to auction houses, to websites offering venues for both service providers and clients to come in contact with one another. For the service provider, sites such as Elance.com and Guru.com are an excellent venue. These sites do take a portion of the earnings, but also guarantee payment; a desirable quality in online based business as chasing after payment for services already performed can be time consuming and fruitless.

Drop ship sites are those that stock and ship your product to perspective customers. In most cases, the business owner will sell the product, either through their own site or by way of advertisements and links. The drop ship site then performs the task of securing payment and shipping merchandise, handling all of the aspects of return policy protocol. The business owner is then paid by the drop ship site.

Another area of online revenue lies in advertisement itself. Entities, such as Google adsense place ads on owner’s sites or blogs and provide payment to the author/owner per click or page view, depending on the program. Affiliate marketing is also popular for an ongoing revenue stream with little or no effort. Affiliates will include specially coded links that take the viewer back to the affiliate site. When a customer enters the site through a link, that business registers the owner of the affiliate link, and pays a percentage of sales to the affiliate if the viewer purchases any products on their visit.

Virtually any business enterprise you would find in a brick and mortar store is accounted for online. The trick to making an online business successful is largely in the promotion and networking ability of its owners and employees, which does not necessarily mean the expenditure of great amounts of money. Just as in the real world, a business owner’s online conduct should remain professional and responsible. If that owner offers a service, deliver on that service as promised, and provide good quality work, their reputation will grow. As opposed to a storefront in your town, the online reputation will grow without the boundaries of geography. There are no limits to what can be accomplished online, without the expenditure of traditional business overhead, such as rent, inventory, returns, utility bills, and in many cases employees.
